Tim Berners-Lee is correct. MOBI does increase the cost of web presence!
The needs of cell-based connections require either:
Returning all pages of a web site to text and very small graphics (under 2k)
Or
Keeping the already present pages the same and converting their main substance to accommodate the technologies of many handheld devices - especially when these are connected to cell-phone based wireless internet.
This can be done by building each MOBI page from scratch or by using a conversion program such as the Applet contained in Adobe's Go Live (versions 8/CS2 or 9/CS3). (This eliminates from your existing page anything that would stop your page from loading on a mobile device and replaces the coding, dtd, and markup language.
Here is a list of what you may be used to using as either a web surfer or a designer/composer of web pages that must be limited or eliminated for MOBI connection:
In a way, this is a combination of a return to 28kbits dialup web written in a an xml discipline. Yet, this is what is needed for the connection speeds of cell phone based wireless internet is not much faster.
What is most different about the MOBI standards now set by the WWW consortium:
Markup language is a variant of XHTML. It is XHTML-Basic or XHTML-MP.
The DTD (Document Type Definition) is <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD XHTML Mobile 1.0//EN" "http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/xhtml-mobile10.dtd">
Encoding must be: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?> Standard UTF that is often assumed, cannot be. The above MUST be in place.
If you want to test/validate your page(s) that you hope accommodate(s) the needs of mobile users' devices, go to: http://ready.mobi/
