E-Mail Software

This page concerns e-mail programs and services, not what you can do in ministry with e-mail such as e-mail newsletter.

Before you spend money on Outlook (which is NOT included in Microsoft's 2007 Student/Teacher Suite of programs, consider the following options:

1. If you have a web site, you may have an e-mail account and access to that account ready to be set up for you. Check with your web host.

2. If you have access to the web through a dial-up account, you already have an e-mail account ready for you.

3. If you have broadband connection to the internet, you probably have an email account ready for you.

4. If all else fails, try Yahoo.com, msn.com or even gmail from Google.

5. If you must use a separate piece of software, first try Thunderbird. This is Firefox's Email partner.

What to know about your e-mail service:

1. What is the size of your mailbox?

2. Does your service permit incoming e-mails to have attachments (pictures, PDF documents, et al)? Or does the service "strip" them out before they get to you?

3. Does your service strip them all out? Or does it strip out just certain types (e.g. *.exe, *.zip)

4. Can you access your e-mail from the road via the internet (web mail access).

5. Does your e-mail service filter out garbage and spam? How much of it?

6. How long does your e-mail service keep mail in the mailbox before purging it?

7. What anti-spamware and anti-virus programs does your e-mail company recommend?
